Edifícios Eficientes

Universidade Federal de Goiás, Florida International University and Goiânia’s Municipal City Hall became partners for three years in oder to better the energy consumption in public municipality buildings.

The municipalities were chosen based on their population size, the high levels of energy use and their will to facilitate and put in effect changes to better efficient energy use.

This research project will take place in the following cities: Goiania, Brazil, Valdivia/Los Rios in Chile, and Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.

History

In 2013 Florida International University (FIU) won a grant from the Department of State from the United States of America to lead the ECPA project in energy efficiency along with three universities from South America. The selected universities were: Universidade Federal de Goias (UFG) in Brazil, Universidad Austral de Chile (UACH), and the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago. The three cities selected for the project were Goiania, Brazil, Valdivia/Los Rios in Chile, and Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. The three municipalities contain a dense population and high-energy consumption and aim for efficient use of energy and seek solutions for carbon emissions. The project began in September 2013 and is set to last 36 months.

Objectives

This grant supports work to lower energy consumption in municipal buildings through the development and implementation of sound energy efficiency and policies. Six public municipalities were selected as pilot projects, two being of each being educational facilities, health facilities and administration facilities.

Methods

The initial energy efficiency analysis for the selected municipalities will be made based on the legislation and energy bills.

Developing recommendations in order to better efficiently use energy in municipal buildings will be one of the results from the analysis.

To create efficient energy measures and recommend the government partners and the interested parties the actions that are necessary to successfully implement the standards and codes of construction.

Monitor and evaluate the results of a project with the use of equipments and 3-dimentional computer models. Show the results of the project and provide a reference point for future interventions on municipal buildings.
